Celebrate Halloween and howl at the full moon at 10,000 feet above sea level. We'll venture through a dark ponderosa and fir forest in the Sandia wilderness and see what awaits us for All-Hallows-Eve. We’ll start by watching the sunset over the continental divide, observe the full “blue” moon rise in the East and count falling stars as they race through the heavens while we make our way to the Sandia crest. This three-hour long hike is approximately 3 miles round trip, 500 vertical feet of climbing and is rated as moderate. In observance of COVID-19 restrictions, bring your own water, a snack, mask and wear appropriate attire. Meet at the Ellis trailhead in the Sandia mountains at 5:30 p.m.
Directions: from Albuquerque, drive east on I-40 to Exit 175 toward Cedar Crest/NM-14. Follow NM-14 aka the Turquoise Trail north for approximately 6.5 miles to NM-536/Sandia Crest Scenic Byway. Turn left onto NM-536 and follow it for about 12 miles up the mountain. Ellis Trailhead parking is to your left and is well marked.
